Free Press player and coach of the year

Congratulations to North Lenoir’s Brandon Sutton and NL coach Jim Montague, who have been named the 2007 Free Press baseball player and baseball coach of the year, respectively. Articles honoring each of them will be in Sunday’s Free Press.

This was a tough choice between Sutton, South Lenoir’s Brad Jones and North Lenoir’s Sthil Sowers. But at the end, it was decided that Sutton’s body of work for the entire season stood out.

Likewise with the COTY honor. Coach Montague did a fantastic job getting NL to the 2A finals against a good-as-it-was-advertised East Rutherford squad that was built to down the Hawks. SL’s Troy Eason and Bethel Christian Academy’s Bert Potter were the finalists for the COTY honor.

Again, congratulations to Brandon and Coach Montague.

Congrats to Brandon Sutton & Coach Montague for an outstanding season this year. Brandon so deserved this award for his hard work and dedication on the field everytime out! He is a true competitor, and is a fine example of a student-athlete that displays Class! To step up when Sthil went down, was enough right there, but nobody, and I mean nobody wanted it more than Brandon Sutton. He was without a doubt the most dominant pitcher in the state this year, not to mention he continues to prove what he’s about on the mound for Post 43. A complete game win over Greene Central last nigh! Congrats Brandon you are the best!

To Coach Montague, to be able and take a team to 3 straight state championship finals, and win 2 of the 3, is amazing in itself! But after watching Sthil go down with injuries, and overcoming the adversity, you did what you do best, make those kids gel, and understand that they could win, and get back to where they were in 2005, & 2006. I know you are proud of those kids, especially Brandon! Both of you should be very proud! Congrats to both of you!
